Soon after Sojourn Church launched Sunday morning gatherings in August of 2012, a couple families who live in Cochran, a city about 25 miles Southeast of Warner Robins, began attending. Before long, the number of people attending Sojourn Church in Warner Robins who live in Cochran grew from a couple families into several families. A community group was started in Cochran under the leadership of Pastor Lee Wright. That community group has continued to grow in numbers and influence over the past couple of years.
As soon as we realized that God was calling people to be members of Sojourn who live in Cochran, we began dreaming about what it might look like to plant a Sojourn Church campus in Cochran. Doing so would put Sojourn in a position to be able to better reach the people of Cochran, and allow the members of Sojourn Church who live in Cochran to worship and serve Jesus in their city.
In the last couple months, the leadership of Sojourn Church has given considerable time to prayerfully dreaming about what God would have us to do. Recently, the elders of Sojourn Church went on an overnight retreat where we spent hours prayerfully seeking God’s wisdom and guidance about what should be done next.
The result? We believe that now is the time to plant a Sojourn Church campus in Cochran. We are still working on some of the details, and you can expect more to come as we put this vision into writing. But below are some of the details that we do know.
1) One church with multiple locations – Once Sojourn Church Cochran launches, Sojourn Church will be one church with two campuses – Warner Robins and Cochran. Sojourn Church will have one budget, one staff team, and one elder board. But we will have weekly gatherings and community groups in two different locations.
Moving forward, we hope to be able to replicate this model in more cities in Middle Georgia. One day, Lord willing, there will be a Sojourn Church campus in Fort Valley, Dublin, and more!
2) Launch date for Cochran - The tentative launch date for the Cochran campus is August 9, 2015.
3) How will the Sunday gatherings work in Cochran? – The Cochran campus will meet on Sunday evenings. Pastor Ryan will be the primary preacher. Worship Director, Josh Maloy, will oversee music. Members of Sojourn who plan to worship primarily at the Cochran campus will be tasked with filling the necessary volunteer positions that are essential to any Sunday gathering of Sojourn Church – kids ministry, hospitality, sound, etc.
We have been given an opportunity by God to make a real impact on the city of Cochran. God has given us committed members of Sojourn who live in and love the city of Cochran. These realities, coupled with our commitment to expand the gospel through church planting, compels us to step out in faith and launch the Cochran campus of Sojourn Church.
Please pray for wisdom and guidance for our leadership team as we continue to work through the details. These are exciting times for Sojourn Church. Together, let’s look to God, embrace his mission, and enjoy the ride.
